The 90-Day Reality: How Long It Takes to Hire Legal Talent

Newsletter Articles

When a hiring manager looks to bring on legal talent, the first question is almost always: “How long will this take?” The honest answer? It depends. But in most cases, anything under 45 days is the exception, not the rule. A realistic expectation for a well-run search is closer to three months.

Hiring Math: Why It Adds Up

That timeline makes more sense once you look at the logistics of a typical hiring process:

And that’s assuming calendars cooperate. No travel. No conflicts. No delays.

We’ve certainly completed searches much faster when circumstances allowed. But when speed becomes the primary goal, frustration usually follows. The strongest hires come from a thoughtful, well-paced process.

Candidates: Timing Matters More Than You Think

If you’re the one looking for a new seat, don’t let a 90 day +/- timeline discourage you — let it prepare you. Many candidates assume that once they decide to make a move, they’ll be starting a new job within a few weeks. In reality, beginning to explore the job market in January typically results in a new job no earlier than April or May.

A few things to keep in mind:

Starting your search early gives you options and leverage. Waiting until you’re completely burned out often leads to rushed decisions and settling for a role that isn’t the right long-term fit. Think of the search as a process, not a transaction. The goal isn’t to move fast, it’s to move well.

The Bottom Line

The best hires — and the best career moves — come from planning ahead, managing expectations, and giving the process the time it needs to work.
